Keeper of the Conservatories

Ssisao, South Irusaq, 15th Century Post Imperium: This Robe is worn by a highly-valued citizen of Ssisao, that great Southern desert city. Water is precious in Ssisao, and so are plants; not only for food crops, but for beauty. The city boasts many gardens and conservatories, both private and public. The Keeper attends to the welfare of public conservatories; hiring staff, organising water systems, choosing designs and also plantings, and maintains a huge repository of rare plants and seeds called the Botanicum. Every plant is recorded and samples are kept for future use. There is a seed bank bigger than any in the whole of Irusaq – a destination for scholars from the whole of the known world. As is usual, when each person takes office a Robe is specially designed for him or her and a miniature of that Robe is kept in the Great Archives of Northern Irusaq. The Robes designed for the Keepers of the Conservatories are unique in that they always feature paintings of flowers. These are so admired that a whole cult of “Flower Ladies” has evolved, where ladies of the city emulate the Keepers by wearing painted garments.
