Signmaster

Ssisao, 15th Century Post Imperium: The Signmaster is responsible for all communications outside the city walls of Ssisao. His is an important role because the safety of the citizens depends on good communications with the elusive Sand Warriors, those guerilla fighters living in he sand dunes outside the walls. Ssisao is frequently attacked by militant groups of nomads desparate to enjoy some of the riches of the great Southern city, so it is vital to be ready at all times to defend its walls. The Signers use metal discs in daylight and flashing torches at night to send their messages, which are encrypted in a code so complex, that it is said that nobody has ever broken it. Signers and their leader the Signmaster, are so active in the field that they need to wear protection in the form of a light armour to protect the most vulnerable areas of the body – the neck, the intestines, the heart, lungs and the legs. Their womenfolk also adopt similar protection; not actual armour, but talismans and packets of spells designed to protect their husbands and sons from the enemy. Like the Sand Warriors, the life of the Signers and their Signmaster is very precarious, but they are well-rewarded for their dedication, and many have risen to more senior roles in the management of the city.
